Portrait of the sign

Dear Virgo friends, the ancient poet entrusts you with study and the learned arts: you care less about piling things up than about understanding the causes and forces behind them, and you have the gift of precise speech and of the mind’s eye, which sees even what is hidden. He adds a note that concerns you closely: modesty, which in tender years holds you back. You are the one who spots the typo, the detail out of place, the fold that does not sit right, and you do it as a service, not out of spite. You are useful, reliable, discreet; you trust facts more than promises. In love you love through concrete attentions, the medicine fetched, the bill sorted, and you expect the same care; at work you shine where method, analysis and precision are needed, and you suffer where chaos reigns. Your risk is criticism that spares no one, least of all yourself. There is a detail the poet describes with admiration: from this sign comes the swift writer, the one for whom a letter stands for a word, who outruns the tongue with his signs and takes down long speeches at speed in new abbreviations. Today we would say: you take notes, you summarise, you file, and you turn other people’s chaos into a clean document. But modesty, he says, reins in nature’s great gifts with the bridle and knots of discipline, and the sign, he adds with a smile, is not fertile, no wonder in a virgin. He is not only talking about children: he is talking about what you do not let be born because it is not yet perfect. The advice: allow yourself imperfection once a day. The world does not collapse, and you breathe.

«At quibus Erigone dixit nascentibus aevum ad studium ducet mores et pectora doctis artibus instituet, nec tam compendia census quam causas viresque dabit perquirere rerum. illa decus linguae faciet regnumque loquendi atque oculos mentis, qui possint cernere cuncta quamvis occultis naturae condita causis. hinc et scriptor erit velox, cui littera verbum est quique notis linguam superet cursimque loquentis excipiat longas nova per compendia voces. in vitio bona sunt: teneros pudor impedit annos, magnaque naturae cohibendo munera frenat ora magisterio nodisque coercita Virgo. nec fecundus erit (quid mirum in virgine?) partus.»

The Moon in Virgo

The Moon is passing through Virgo: the mood turns practical, attentive, a little fussy. Drawers and accounts get sorted, people think about their health, every detail gets noticed. A good day for precision work, medical check-ups, tidying; less good for grand romantic gestures.
