Portrait of the sign

Dear Capricorn friends, the ancient poet entrusts you with the fire kept by Vesta at the heart of the house: from there come your arts, digging for hidden metals, smelting the riches of the earth and doubling matter with a sure hand. It is the portrait of someone who builds patiently and wastes no spark. You are not in a hurry, you have a direction. You climb the mountain one step at a time and do not care if others run: you know you will get there. You are serious, responsible, sometimes too much so, and under the shell you keep a dry humour few people know. In love you are faithful and little given to fuss, you show it through deeds, but you need to feel valued; at work you shine where structure, tenacity and a long view are needed, and you struggle where everything is improvised. The risk is closing your heart to protect it and mistaking duty for life. The poet widens the picture: everything done with fire is yours, wrought silver and gold, iron melted in the furnace, bronze, the bread baking on the hearth; and also the clothes and goods that drive out the cold, because your sign keeps the heart of winter, the longest nights and the light that begins to grow again. Then he adds two uncomfortable lines: from here comes a certain mobility of things, a mind that changes and floats, and a first age that serves Venus with some fault, while old age, under the fish joined to the goat, is better. Put plainly: your seriousness is an achievement, not a birthright; when young you can be more unstable and more tempted than your reputation tells, and with the years you truly become the rock everyone sees. The advice: once a week do something useless and beautiful. The mountain will not run away.

«Vesta tuos, Capricorne, fovet penetralibus ignes: hinc artes studiumque trahis. nam quidquid in usus ignis eget poscitque novas ad munera flammas sub te censendum est. scrutari caeca metalla, depositas et opes terrarum exurere venis, materiamque manu certa duplicare erit a te, quidquid et argento fabricetur, quidquid et auro. quod ferrum calidi solvant atque aera camini consummentque foci Cererem, tua munera surgent. addis et in vestes studium mercemque fugantem frigora, brumalem servans per saecula sortem, qua retrahis ductas summa ad fastigia noctes nascentemque facis revocatis lucibus annum. hinc et mobilitas rerum, mutataque saepe mens natat; et Veneri mixto cum crimine servit pars prior, at melior iuncto sub pisce senecta est.»

The Moon in Capricorn

The Moon is passing through Capricorn: the mood turns serious, ambitious, a little cold. People think about career, reputation, money to set aside; they tend to calculate rather than feel. A good day for business, organisation and duties; less good for tenderness.
