Knight of Pentacles, plate by Pamela Colman Smith
Pamela Colman Smith, 1910

Upright

The Knight of Pentacles stands still on his heavy horse in the middle of a ploughed field, holding the coin before him: utility, serviceableness, interest, responsibility, rectitude, all on the practical plane. He is the person you can count on, who arrives on time and does what he said. If these days you are asked for reliability, an assignment, a deadline, a family to keep going, it is no accident: this is your moment. He may indicate a serious man offering you stability, in love or in business. The practical advice: do the boring but necessary work, and do not fear seeming slow. Here slowness is method.

Reversed

Reversed, the Knight of Pentacles never gets going again: inertia, idleness, stagnation, and with them placidity, discouragement, carelessness. Solidity has become laziness, and calm a way of not deciding. If these days you put everything off until tomorrow, the work, the interview, the check-up, the conversation with your partner, telling yourself nothing would change anyway, it is no accident: you have grown discouraged. Watch what breaks down for lack of maintenance, the house, the accounts, the relationship. It is not a sentence: the horse is only standing still. The practical advice: pick the smallest task on the list and do it today, within the hour.
