The Fool, plate by Pamela Colman Smith
Pamela Colman Smith, 1910

Upright

This card tells you something simple: you want to set off without checking where your feet land. The Fool is enthusiasm that never counts the cost, a gut decision, the thrill of a beginning. Waite uses strong words, delirium, frenzy, extravagance, and even that self-betrayal of someone who, carried away by euphoria, lets slip what would have been better kept quiet: in a negotiation or in a brand-new love, talking too much can cost you dearly. That is not wrong: nothing starts without a little madness, not a love, not a new job. But be careful not to mistake courage for carelessness. Before you leap, write down what you actually stand to lose and ask someone you trust whether you sound clear-headed. Then, if your heart still says yes, go.

Reversed

If you feel scattered, absent, with your head somewhere else, it is no accident: the reversed Fool speaks of negligence and energy spread in too many directions. In love you risk taking the person beside you for granted; at work, leaving something that mattered half done. The danger here is not the leap but the emptiness: doing many things and finishing none. The advice is practical: pick one single task to close this week and close it. Even a small one. Putting one corner in order gives you back the sense of everything else.
