Nine of Cups, plate by Pamela Colman Smith
Pamela Colman Smith, 1910

Upright

The Nine of Cups is the contented innkeeper, sitting with folded arms before his nine cups: concord, contentment, physical well-being, victory, advantage. It is the card of the wish granted. If these days you feel at peace with your body, your accounts, the people around you, it is no accident: you did what was needed, and now you reap. In love it promises satisfaction; at work, a result that proves you right; in health, energy regained. The practical advice: enjoy the moment without guilt, but do not sit at that table forever. One cup, perhaps, offer to someone who has fewer.

Reversed

Reversed, the Nine of Cups is still a good card: truth, loyalty, liberty, says Waite. But the readings vary and include mistakes and imperfections. The well-being is there, but with a few cracks: a sincere friend telling you something uncomfortable, a gain arriving with a small error to fix, a freedom won that leaves you a little alone. If these days you are happy but not entirely, it is no accident. Watch the neglected details, in a contract or a relationship. It is not a sentence. The practical advice: accept the truth you are told, correct the mistake, and do not demand perfection.
