Ace of Wands, plate by Pamela Colman Smith
Pamela Colman Smith, 1910

Upright

The Ace of Wands is a spark: creation, invention, the start of an enterprise. If these days you feel a new energy, a desire to act, it is no accident. The card speaks of origins and family, so it may announce a birth, a plan for a home, a business starting from scratch. It is the principle, the source, the vital force behind every beginning; and another account, reported by Waite, speaks of money, fortune and inheritance: the spark may be financial too, a sum that unlocks the project. At work it is the right moment to pitch the idea you keep in the drawer; in love, to make the first move. The practical advice: do not wait for everything to be perfect. Light the fire now, with what you have, and then feed it day by day.

«Creation, invention, enterprise, the powers which result in these; principle, beginning, source; birth, family, origin, and in a sense the virility which is behind them; the starting point of enterprises; according to another account, money, fortune, inheritance.»

Reversed

Reversed, the Ace of Wands loses its flame: fall, decline, a project collapsing before it starts, and a clouded joy, the kind you cannot fully enjoy. If these days you feel switched off, without drive at work or in a relationship just born, it is no accident: something was not planted well. It is not a sentence, it is a delay. Be careful not to invest money or energy in a beginning that already looks tired. The practical advice: postpone the launch by a week and ask yourself what you truly lack in order to set out.
