Virgil, Aeneid III.188

Melphi

Melphi speaks

Cedamus Phoebo, et moniti meliora sequamur.

The priest translates

«Let us yield to Phoebus and, now that we are warned, follow the better course.»

And interprets

This line tells you something simple: you have received a clear signal, and it is time to change course without pride. Perhaps you kept pushing down one road, in love, at work, in a project, and events have shown you it was not the right one. Melphi invites you to admit the mistake calmly: even wise people misread the signs, and true wisdom lies in correcting yourself in time. It is not a defeat, it is precious information. To yield, here, does not mean to give up, it means to listen. Let go of the solution you had defended and follow the better one, now that you can see it.

The historical translations

Annibal Caro (1581)
Cediamo a Febo; e ciò che ’l dio del vero
Ne dà per meglio, per miglior s’elegga.
Theodore C. Williams (1910)
Now Phoebus speaks. Obedient let us be,
and, warned by him, our happier lot pursue!”
