Page of Swords, plate by Pamela Colman Smith
Pamela Colman Smith, 1910

Upright

The Page of Swords is a lithe youth holding his sword upright and looking in every direction: authority, vigilance, overseeing, examination, a secret service, says Waite. It is the card of someone who observes before acting. If these days you feel on alert, with the sense that something is moving around you, a change at the office, a strange silence in the family, it is no accident: your eyes are open, and rightly so. It can also indicate a young, sharp person keeping watch on you. The practical advice: gather information, read between the lines, but do not act yet. Observe, take notes, and speak only when you know.

Reversed

Reversed, the Page of Swords shows the worse side of the same qualities: vigilance becomes spying, curiosity indiscretion, and then the unforeseen arrives exactly when you are not ready. Waite also hints at sickness. If these days someone is rummaging through your affairs, or you are the one checking another person’s phone, it is no accident that you feel uneasy. Be careful about what you discover without meaning to, and about the health you neglect while watching others. It is not a sentence. The practical advice: stop investigating and ask a direct question; then book that medical check-up you keep putting off.
